Earthjustice

"From day one, Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund (name changed to Earthjustice in 1997) used the law to even the odds against powerful special interests." - from Earthjustice website.

With a start as the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund, Earthjustice has been an ongoing part in a series of lawsuits - generally with the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce, the agency in which the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is located. While the Secretary and the Department are the supposed targets of these suits, the fishermen and the people in the businesses who depend on them are the actual victims, the successful (for Earthjustice) settlement of these suits equating to ever-greater restrictions on fishing. Earthjustice has received over $23 million from Pew (link).

  • Heavily involved in an ongoing attempts to scuttle the domestic herring fishery (link) along with the Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen's Association (recipient of over $1.5 million from Pew).
  • Filed to have the Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen's Association participate as Amicus Curiae on the side of the Secretary of Commerce in a suit filed by members of the fishing industry and the towns of New Bedford and Gloucester, Massachusetts againstharsh  groundfish management measures imposed on New England's oldest fishery in 2010 (link)
